90’s Musical Obscurity

So I found this buzzfeed article that I couldn’t look away from. Also, I had to write some commentary. It was a reflex. Couldn’t help it.DGC_Rarities

The article got me to reflect on some old music. Here are my favorites from their list. And some of my personal thoughts.

  • Dig – “Believe”
  • Whale – “Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe”
  • Catherine Wheel – “Waydown”
  • Green Apple Quick Step – “Los Vargos” –  Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard produced their second album in October 1994. Can’t imagine how I got into these guys…
  • K’s Choice – “Not an Addict” One of my favorite K’s Choice songs is “Iron Flower”. Amazing.
  • Juliana Hatfield Three – “My Sister” is the good song… not Juliana Hatfield’s “Universal Heartbeat”
  • Poe – “Angry Johnny”
  • Joydrop – “Beautiful”
  • Frente – “Labor of Love”
  • Hum – “Stars” – If you know me, you know I’ve never stopped listening to this song or this band. In fact, there are long stretches where Hum is the only band I listen to.
  • The Posies – “Dream all Day”
  • Belly – “Now They’ll Sleep” Or any Belly song! “Dusted”, “Superconnected”, and of course “Feed the Tree”. And Tanya Donnelly’s solo stuff is pretty good, too.
  • Luscious Jackson – “Naked Eye”
  • The Sundays – “Here’s Where the Story Ends” Or, you know, anything by the Sundays.
  • Sloan- “Underwhelmed”? Listen to “Stove/Smother” instead: http://vimeo.com/42479075 Please. It’s pretty awesome.
  • Civ –  “Can’t Wait One Minute More” Okay, this one I had completely forgotten about.
  • Stereo MC’s – “Connected” It’s one of those songs that I could never remember the artist. An “oh yeah” song.
  • The Farm – “Groovy Train” Haha, this one kind of makes me laugh.
  • Our Lady Peace – “4am” Seriously, OLP is on here? First, this song makes me cry. Like Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” and “High and Dry”. Any musical education is incomplete without frequent and repeated exposure to both bands.
  • Veruca Salt – “Number One Blind” Ahh! They’re trying to kill me here. Another band I listen to regularly. And by the way, this album (“American Thighs”) is a gem all the way through, as is “Eight Arms to Hold You”
  • Letters to Cleo – “Here and Now” I was WONDERING when they were going to mention this one! LOVE LOVE LOVE
  • The Rentals – “Friends of P” I completely forgot about this one. Wow!
  • Meat Puppets – “Backwater” No explanation needed. Their link was broken so here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxpvsSode0k

But they missed some. Here are some I came up with off the top of my head. I bet a look at my mp3 collection would reveal a very long list. Ha!

  • The Toadies “Possum Kingdom”
  • Spacehog “In the Meantime”
  • Butthole Surfers “Pepper”
  • Tripping Daisy “I Got a Girl”
  • The Flys “Got You Where I Want You”
  • The Refreshments “Banditos”
  • Monster Magnet “Space Lord”
  • Local H “Bound for the Floor”
  • The Breeders “Cannonball”
  • Cracker. But they have too many songs that you know but don’t think you know.
  • Lit “My Own Worst Enemy”
  • Eve 6 “Inside Out”
  • Spin Doctors “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t be Wrong”
  • Deep Blue Something “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”
  • Nada Surf “Popular” The rest of their stuff is great. Seriously.
  • Sponge “Plowed” “Molly” I love Sponge.

What songs can you think of that might be lost in the 90’s?
