We’ve been getting a lot of rain this week. A lot. And we’ve had lots of rain before. And there has been flooding in our basement in the past. \ud83d\ude41 So our alderperson sent out an email with tips on how to protect your basement from water damage. It’s not guaranteed to alleviate ALL water, but it can certainly help.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Make sure all gutters and downspouts are clear of debris so they can work properly.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Downspouts should extend at least 5\u20137 feet away from your home.\u00a0 The water must flow away from the downspout discharge point.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Check your sump pump and discharge line for proper operation. If it is older, consider replacing.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Use temporary extensions on downspouts and sump pump lines to keep the water away from your home.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Check for any ponding or pooling of water within 15 feet of your house.\u00a0 If present, create a temporary drainage ditch to drain the water away.<\/span><\/p>\n

6.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Check grading around your foundation.\u00a0 A one-inch slope per foot grade should be maintained around your entire home for at least 5-7 feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Check for sidewalks, driveways or patios that slope towards the house.\u00a0 These should be replaced as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

8.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If you have any evidence of water or excessive moisture in your basement, contact a basement specialist to discuss the cause and any repairs.\u00a0 If neglected, basements can be very expensive to repair.<\/span><\/p>\n

9.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Call your insurance agent\u2026Homeowners insurance does not cover flood related damages.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

10.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Consider purchasing a Flood Insurance policy\u2026visit: www.floodsmart.gov<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
