{"id":55,"date":"2007-08-21T01:38:08","date_gmt":"2007-08-21T06:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jen.jllocke.com\/blog\/2007\/08\/21\/i-dont-like-the-drugs-but-the-drugs-like-my-doctor\/"},"modified":"2007-08-21T01:38:08","modified_gmt":"2007-08-21T06:38:08","slug":"i-dont-like-the-drugs-but-the-drugs-like-my-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jen.jllocke.com\/blog\/2007\/08\/i-dont-like-the-drugs-but-the-drugs-like-my-doctor\/","title":{"rendered":"I don&#8217;t like the drugs but the drugs like my doctor."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>History:\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had allergies all of my life.\u00a0 I have had sinus problems all my life.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve spent way too much time around various kinds of smoke in various situations.\u00a0 Consequently, I&#8217;ve developed one of the most congested and infected sinus cavities on\u00a0the planet (at least, by my estimation).\u00a0 I routinely have problems sleeping and, upon waking, devote an hour or more solely to clearing my sinuses before I can eat, shower, brush my teeth, or do anything worth doing.\u00a0 I have developed a high level of dependency on over-the-counter nasal sprays that help me decongest (and of course re-congest).<\/p>\n<p>Today:\u00a0 I went to the doctor.\u00a0 The doctor was booked.\u00a0 I agreed to see the nurse practitioner.\u00a0 Between the time when I entered the waiting room and was escorted to the room where the doctor sees you, two pharmaceutical salespeople entered, spoke with the staff, etc.\u00a0 The time I spent in the waiting room amounted to the amount of time it takes to fill out one form requesting insurance information and my address.\u00a0 It was less than fifteen minutes.\u00a0 If this is the pace at which the office receives these salespeople, it sure explains what I was about to encounter.<\/p>\n<p>I explained to the nurse what I needed, that I had been feeling crummy for\u00a0a long time and want to be off of the nasal sprays and feel like a normal human being again.\u00a0 She takes her notes and lets the nurse practitioner know that I am ready.\u00a0 Nurse practitioner enters and I begin the same story.\u00a0 Two sentences in she is furiously scribbling and has lost all connection to the words that are coming out of my mouth.\u00a0 She asks no questions about my symptoms.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t get to tell her that I don&#8217;t want to have a dependency on nasal sprays.\u00a0 She starts in asking what allergy medications I am taking\/have taken and their effectiveness.\u00a0 She explains the benefits of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.singulair.com\/montelukast_sodium\/singulair\/consumer\/asthma\/for_adults\/singulair_helps_control_asthma\/ask_your_doctor.jsp?WT.srch=1&amp;WT.mc_id=S248L\">Singulair<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allegra.com\/\">Allegra<\/a>, and this new nasal spray, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.veramyst.com\/home.html\">Veramyst<\/a>, that not only helps with nasal allergy symptoms but also with symptoms felt in the eyes.\u00a0 I explain to her the lack of improvement <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.singulair.com\/montelukast_sodium\/singulair\/consumer\/asthma\/for_adults\/singulair_helps_control_asthma\/ask_your_doctor.jsp?WT.srch=1&amp;WT.mc_id=S248L\">Singulair<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allegra.com\/\">Allegra<\/a> have shown in my body before.\u00a0 And I don&#8217;t even begin to tell her how unhappy I am about the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.veramyst.com\/home.html\">Veramyst<\/a> because I can tell she&#8217;s getting tired of trying to convince me.\u00a0 She assures me that these will help &#8211; I just need to give them a try.\u00a0 She explains how they work and gives me dosage instructions, shoves everything in a plastic bag with another drug&#8217;s name printed in blue ink on the side,\u00a0and helps me to the door.\u00a0 Before I know what&#8217;s hit me, I am now assigned three drugs to take daily and not given any long-term plan to make me healthier.\u00a0 Nor an explanation for a lack of a plan.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t come to the doctor for this.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t taken any of the drugs.\u00a0 I will seek a second opinion tomorrow.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to be on drugs.\u00a0 Especially the kind they pimp on TV.\u00a0 I want to be a clean, healthy person.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I want help from a doctor.\u00a0 Not to be drugged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I have a family member who is in the pharmaceutical sales business.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what he does.\u00a0 I know he makes a fantastic living off pharmaceuticals.\u00a0\u00a0I don&#8217;t mean to insult the way he makes his money.\u00a0 Everybody does what\u00a0s\/he&#8217;s good at and we all have to face moral\/ethical decisions about our jobs and live with what we choose for ourselves.\u00a0\u00a0I just wish people like me didn&#8217;t have to suffer at the doctor&#8217;s office because of it.\u00a0 I wonder how many pills are pimped by doctors everyday because of the salespeople who drop off &#8220;samples&#8221;
